Deer Hunters as Defenders of Liberty

There is talk about how many riflemen live in America, and whether that group of people can be an effective force against the State.

Militia.

Not an organized militia like OVM, filled with men and women who train and study and walk the walk.

But an unorganized militia, much like the Founders and Framers had in mind.

Is not the very definition of the unorganized militia essentially: Guys and gals with their own firearms and gear showing up to defend home & hearth?  Will not the unorganized militia consist of former military members who bring much to the table?  Will there not be doctors and plumbers and linemen who know how things work and how to break said things?  Will not unorganized militia be contacted by organized militia such as OVM when the world gets ugly?  Will not the unorganized militia be as motivated to protect their home as the organized and the military man?

One of the prudent concerns is how do we get from step one (guys and gals with guns) to step three (victory).  Step two is often a soupy grey of undefined maybes and what ifs.

Much depends on the acts and actions of the enemy.  Much will be seat-of-the-pants and make-it-up-as-you-go when it comes to the unorganized militia in America.  It is simple reality.

Here's a test to help you decide if a few million guys and gals with deer rifles can be a potent weapon in the field against statist intentions:  Think back to your youth when hunting was new to you.  Think about your father, or uncle, and the guys at camp around the fire.

In an ugly world, if you were tasked with getting from Point A to Point B, but you knew there were 20-50 guys and gals from deer hunting camps between A & B, would you be worried about your odds of success?  Even if you had light armor and trained troops with full auto weapons?

I suspect most guys and gals at those camps of my youth would put the fear of God in any Statist tasked with challenging them.  Average Americans have proved time and again the ability to adapt, improvise and overcome.  You think that is dead in most Americans today?  Maybe.  But if only 10% of deer hunters decided to defend home & hearth, capable of putting .30-.06 fire on targets at 300 yards, capable of picking the time and place of engagements, capable of dialing into their local community to find out where the Bad Guys are and when they will be there.

In Calvert County Maryland where I spent most of my youth and teen years, among watermen and good ol' boys, you'd better believe there were "Intel Networks" in place that were very accurate and effective.  And all those good ol' boys could drop a deer at 300 yards with a spotlight and didi before LEO showed up.  If I had to drive down Maryland Route 4 with a convoy, and I knew my uncle and his buddies were there, somewhere, and determined to deny the route, I'd place my money on them.

And the old guys who don't have what it takes to hump a ruck any more?  A man in a rocking chair on a porch overlooking a road, with a deer rifle and an FU attitude, is a problem for anyone he doesn't want passing that road.

Don't worry about the unorganized militia.  Real Americans will step up and crush the learning curve.  Lazy Americans will die.  It is win-win for Liberty.

Stop worrying so much about what others are doing, and put yourself in a position to take point when those good ol' boys decide to leave the porch.  Make sure you have a few extras of essentials to fill in the gaps of their gear.

And you should find comfort in the knowledge that most Statist activity will be limited to major metro areas and their immediate suburbs.

  1. I just got done taking my rifle for a walk in the woods in Wyoming. Elk hunting, and with a fairly large camp (Wy residents) one of the ways we did it, is to push through a stand of timber and try to make the elk leave their comfort zone. Once we went into the woods everybody was gone...this is natural for these guys, they disappear. I have no doubt that they could hold their own in their own area if they were motivated to do so. Also, the talk around the camp fire very interesting, I heard the words "civil war" more than a few times - although all they really want is to be left alone. This is coming from a CA resident.

  2. And to clarify a bit, I've also been reading Am Merc about the deer hunters. Step two is the issue for sure. IMO, that is the organization and leadership step and it will develop and mature when it needs to. Until then there will be small units causing necessary mayhem however they can.

  3. Very good points, Sam.

A few days ago I had a hunter or hunters in my woods. It was a larger caliber, likely 30.06 or .308, not a .223, so I had guessed they were hunting deer. The fact that they were doing this at 1 AM also pointed to the fact that they were poaching. (No hunting here in PA after dark and before sunrise.)

At first it quite ticked me off as I don't like folks hunting on my land without permission, and I especially don't like bullets possibly coming towards my family should someone be shooting in the general direction of my house and miss.

But then I figured that if someone was willing to hunt deer at 1 AM on a pitch black night, (almost full moon, but completely overcast), that they would likely make the lives of anyone who is trying to oppress them a living hell. ;)

I certainly wasn't interested enough to go check it out at 1 AM and run across someone with a night scope that didn't want to get caught doing what they were doing, and I know these woods like the back of my hand. The locals who know the terrain will always have the advantage over someone who's first view of the land is from a topographical map.

Once people have been pushed so far, that they have no where to go, but THROUGH those who are pushing them... watch out. That's when regular folks turn from lambs into lions. And if someone doesn't heed that lesson from history... oh well, it's your ass then.

People will only take so much tyranny. Those with the will to do so, will rise up and claim liberty for their own. The lazy and the cowardly will either cringe in their holes, or refuse to stand up, and thus perish in their own turn, whether by roaming groups of gangs and marauders, or an out of control Statist element.

Either way, one way or another, America will be inhabited by Patriots once again. They'll probably be the only ones left alive when the dust settles, most likely.

    And ultimately... Liberty wins.

  4. Daniel here. This is sorta related...

I've been following a series by Takuan Seiyo at Gates of Vienna. From part 7 here:

    http://gatesofvienna.blogspot.com/2012/09/the-bee-and-lamb-part-7.html

If Buddhism has four noble truths that explain the earthly suffering of man and propose its cure, I believe the path to Western redemption has seven. They proceed from awareness to recognition to rejection to resolve to implementation:

    1. The Progressive Left is clinically insane[8].

    2. The Western State is controlled by the Progressive Left.

    3. Ergo, the Western State is insane, and the West as a whole is insane and bent on suicide for insane reasons.

    4. The Western State wages an unacknowledged civil war against its autochthon population, with nearly omnipotent means at its disposal.

    5. Therefore, it’s misspent energy to struggle against the Progressive Left and its spawns of multiculturalism and euphemistically defined racism, diversity, inclusion, equity, peace and justice. Madness cannot be cured by argument anyway. The state and its acromegalic extensions like the European Union are the main and the more important foe.

    6. Personal energy is better spent on attaining clarity about the modern Western state, shedding related illusions, practicing withdrawal from the state’s schemes, cultivating inner freedom, maintaining a spiritual practice for charging one’s will to live in freedom, building community and support networks among the like-minded, biding time until the state collapses and preparing to rebuild from the wreckage.

    7. The state will collapse. A fall from a cliff is the inevitable destiny of any entity that marches blindfolded on a road paved with lies while asserting that it’s progressing with open eyes toward a blazing light.

In the next chapter, we will sum up why they whom the hearty American vernacular calls “libtards” are insane, and will then segue to the bolder task of showing that the state itself is insane.

  5. Remember though that the huge majority of those "hunters" go out once a year, maybe just maybe takes a shot at a moving target (and usually misses) and has less than one box of ammo per firearm, usually the box that he bought with the rifle.
I quit hunting deer years ago when I finally got tired of idots that shot at anything that moved. Thank God they were lousy shots.
I'm not putting any faith in America's hunters. Sorry.

  6. One thing to remember in regards to hunters, is that there are all kinds of hunters out there. Some excellent, some average, and some way below average.

One advantage that a successful hunter has, is they are actually shooting and killing something that is alive and mobile. Vs... say... paper targets at a firing range.

I think everyone should go hunting. Even if they don't mean to actually shoot anything. It's good practice, and the fresh air does wonders. It's also a good time to load up a pack and see what one can really carry vs the Superman complex of what they THINK they are going to hump around when SHTF.

  7. At any given time during RevWarI there were never more than 90,000 men under arms for the Colonies. By most guesses, there were about 2.25 million people living here.

That puts the number of Colonists under arms (by percentage) at a rough 3%.

Today we have about 310 million. 3% would be, roughly, 9 million. Do we have 9 million Patriots and hunters and gun owners who would take arms and go to the Green?

Nope. Not even close. Not even in the ball park.

Will the hunters decide any coming conflict? Nope. But those who choose to step up will be more effective than those who stay on the porch. I know, that's not a rosey outlook, especially when FedGov combines with (and arms) FSA, which will easily account for many, many millions under arms.

  8. Good Post Sam,

I had another lengthy reply ready but I think Blogger ate it. Regardless, the current Militias are merely the framework on which any resistance should be built.

Think of the current units as trainers for the "hunters"
when the day comes. WE are ready and able to provide, combat support, communications, logistics, safe houses,
safe travel routes, small unit tactics training etc. when THEY decide to step off the porch.

I have manuals available on demand for ANY preppers/patriots who wish to start or organize a local Militia. The solution to the dilemma of how to organize and train an influx of thousands or tens of thousands of riflemen is an issue already much discussed among my staff.

We follow the old SF ODA "indigenous personnel" training ideal. In fact one of our founding leaders was an ODA vet of the nasty South American "conflicts". There are many SF Vets active in the Militia. They will not go public or advertise by posting on blogs, but they are out here, and more than willing to train a new generation of Minutemen.

Two million hunters will not become Militia Riflemen overnight, but a good hunter (mountain variety) already
has the basics of tracking, stealth and marksmanship down.

I will put them up against any gangbanger or trailer-trash looter or non-mil LEO. Even in large numbers.

Add to those numbers the many force multipliers that we can bring to bear (area denial, control of egress and transit points, denial of food, water, rail traffic,
intimate ground level intel and familiarity with our AO, etc) and I am not as pessimistic as most in the Liberty Movement.

The FedGov is NOT Omnipotent, They are NOT infallible.
They fight among themselves for turf and power. They can not keep secrets very well. Their plans and playbooks are wide open for anyone with moderate S2 capabilities.

In short, they will not have things all their own way when the time comes. We do not live in fear of them.

    Montani Semper Liberi.
