...aaaaaand, GO!

Many of you know (because I have explained it here several times) that a grown man can easily cover 30 feet in 3 seconds or fewer.  If he has a knife or crowbar, you have trouble inbound.

Most of you drill for this eventuality, and know exactly how long it takes you to draw your primary sidearm and double-tap.

The next time you and your buddies get together for training, add this to the mix:  Give the guy at 30 paces a wiffle ball bat, and have another buddy grasp your strong hand at the wrist, with both of his hands.

Then: Go!

What if a third person was holding your off-hand wrist as well?

Or had you in a rear naked choke (a good one).

You do train for these things, yes?  You train hard, right?

There is a dual purpose for proposing this exercise.

One: You need to know how to handle yourself when Bad Guys get inside your personal space.

Two: Holly and I have decided that I will begin to offer a III CQB course very soon, highly specialized and suitable for any Patriot - regardless of sex, physical condition, age.

But first - try the training exercise, and answer the question in your head "Do I (Does my Team) need more training in this area?"

Because if you think Bad Guys can't, or won't, get inside your physical space, with an advantage, you haven't been in many real fights, and you aren't ready for one, either.

  1. Sam, I know you are highly developed in your Martial Arts skill set. I'm not meaning to piss in your yard here by any stretch of the imagination, but I would just like to offer some advice to those that don't speak our language in layman's terms. Meet, beat, or go down in defeat. That's the creed I live by. The best way to fight, is not to get hit. The secret of any battle is avoiding the weapon of the enemy. Never dodge straight back, unless you have excellent interception techniques. It is best to dodge away at some angle, making the assailant have to reorient themselves to your new position. This gives you time to initiate your counter. You want to take and control his center, all while keeping yours and utilizing whatever advantage you have just gained for dominating his balance and closing the separation gap to get up close and personal. Remember, the weapon harms, not the eyes. Keep your eyes on the weapon. Learn how to break contact quickly if you've been grabbed by your opponent. I am amazed at times how fast my Kyoto Sensei can cover a 30 ft gap in 2 seconds or less. He has smacked me across my noggin more than a few times like a lightning bolt. This is an excellent drill you have presented Sam. It will do wonders for those with less experience and also serve as a reminder as to just how quick a fight can turn into CQB wet work.

  3. Heh. George Zimmerman is suffering an awful lot for neglecting empty hand training. "For the lack of a decent Buck and Roll, the kingdom was lost."

(Regardless of the right or wrong in that situation, and I am with most of you in that I think it is wrong-that ol' boy is having an awful lot of trouble because his only plan, indeed his only option, when on his back is "Shoot this kid")
