20 round AR Mags

Folks - the guy who claimed to have a Mosin mag ready for production never responded - so I have no idea where he is on that project.

However - HK and I have a meeting with a shop tomorrow that may produce 20 rd AR mags for us.

The start-up cost ain't cheap.

How many of you guys are still buying 20 rounders when you can find them for about $20 each?

Most places I check are claiming they won't begin to get re-stocked until summer.  I have no idea how accurate that may be.

So the question is: Are 20 round AR mags at about $20 on your "Buy" list these days?

  1. $20 for 20 round mags is cheaper than the only place I have seen them available within the next 2 months, and those are steel anyway.

What material are you thinking? For aluminum mags I'd be willing to pick some up. I'd be OK with steel too but they would be heavier than the equivalent which is why I'd personally prefer aluminum or plastic. I think the plastic ones might be hard to manufacture without some serious tech though - although the DefDist guys are making some headway there.

One last question for you too - why 20 rounds and not 30? I'm not trying to criticize, just curious.

Thanks for the work you are putting in with all your projects - it's appreciated.

  2. Yes I'd be interested and I know a lot of other people who would be too. I have the same question tho...why 20 vs 30?

  4. The short answer on 20 versus 30 is because Mrs. Kerodin lives in the People's Republic of Maryland where 30 rounders are verboten - so even getting hands on one for a local stamp/tool/die shop to work with me steps into Felony territory, and she's no David Gregory. ;)

But you all make it clear, as does my most-trusted Gunner-Buddy, that 30's would sell better.

If I pursue 30's, I assume you'd like aluminum, with aluminum, non-tilt followers? (Not doing polymer, the learning curve is too steep for the time/money I have to invest).

This will tell you how long it's been since I played with hi-cap mags - I assume the reliability issues have been worked out in 30 & 40 rounders?

    1. I've never had a problem with USGI aluminum 30 rounders or PMAGS although the USGI can be hard to shove in on a closed bolt in my opinion. PMAGS avoid this issue by supposedly being built for 31 rounds although I've never tried to load that many to see.

The anti-tilt follower helps a lot as well when it comes to reliability. Can't say I've ever used an aluminum follower myself so I'd have to reserve judgement on them for now but I'd surely be willing to try some out.

Looking forward to hearing more on this project.

  6. For available mags YES, I too would prefer 30 rnd mags but when the options are 20 rnd or out of stock I will take the 20.

  9. Sam,
Was at a local gun show this weekend and scored 10 - 30 rd Pmags for $25. They had WAY more than I could afford at the time, but needless to say they are out there. The show in Monroeville, PA was quite beneficial to my spirits. I could have easily built an AR for a grand or less or purchased a decent one for under $1200. Keep in mind I am not knocking our III Arms brand, I am only stating the facts when I thought all was lost. This past weekend was a light at the end of the tunnel. I thought all that would be on display would be nothing more than fudge, dream catchers and tapestries with deer.

I personally would not utilize a 20 round mag as my 30 round mags are loaded to 26. I never trust leaving mags loaded to the fullest extent. Being analytical, i would say its early in the game to go chasing 20 rounders since 30 rounders are at or around the same price of a buck a round per mag potential.

    Just my $.02

    1. So the show wasn't barren? You could find mags and enough AR parts to assemble?

If so, that means manufacturers are starting to catch up again, now that AWB looks dead.

I was about to make a large investment in 30 rounders - should I? Or were the vendors at your show eventually selling out?
