1984: Do they...

...still assign 1984 to students in public schools?

When a generation has no idea what Orwell warned about, it will be easier to impose Orwellian paradigms upon them.

Any of you parents with school aged children know the answer?

  1. They don't even teach the Constitution anymore. My teens learned it at home, along with reading my copy of 1984.

  2. We read 1984 in high school. However, that was over 15 years ago... Shoot, I'm old now.

I remember not really understanding what the book meant until I arrive in college. And I saw society at its very worst. LOL.

  3. My wife is a middle school English teacher in Virginia, and as of right now they still assign 1984. Her reports of the students responses and understanding of the implications of the things happening right now in this country is encouraging.

  4. All 3 of my kids read it, assigned in 3 different high schools, two public, one private. This was in Commiefornia.

  5. My 15 year old son (who doesn't live with me) didn't even know what the 2nd Amendment was until I told him. Shameful.

  6. Yeah, my daughter was also taught the capital of Peru before she knew the capital of this country so I totally understand where you are coming from Jon.

Anyway, my kids were not assigned any Orwell works but I believe 1984 was on an approved reading list so they could read it if they wished- so it hasn't been burned quite yet.

...but no need to worry about Orwell when we have CT middle schools teaching students that Americans don’t have a 2A right to bear arms.
